In addition to working with literary devices, Fitzgerald also addresses the American dream more generally through the plot and characters in this novel.
Nick Carraway is narrating the story from the future in the order of events it happened. In The Great Gatsby, the American Dream was presented as a corrupted version of what used to be a pure and honest ideal way to live. The idea that the American Dream was about the wealth and the possessions one had been ingrained, somehow, into the minds of Americans during the 1920’s.Next, Fitzgerald uses irony to continue showing corruptness of the american dream in the Great Gatsby. One piece of irony that is used is when Myrtle was spending the day with Tom and was acting like she had money. When Myrtle arrives to her and Tom's apartment she gathers up “her dog and her other purchases”. In reality none of these purchases are really hers. Myrtles desire for wealth shows how corrupt the american dream is because Myrtle is cheating on her husband and chasing after a married man all just for money and “happiness”. Another piece of irony Fitzgerald used to show corruptness in the american dream is when Gatsby first showed Daisy his house. When Gatsby was showing Daisy his house Daisy came across a picture of Gatsby on a yacht, and Daisy states “You never told me you had a pompadour- or a yacht”. It is ironic how Gatsby puts up old pictures of him with nice stuff like he is from old money but really Gatsby will always be from new money. And it shows corruption of the american dream by the way Gatsby completely changes his identity and spends his life trying to get Daisy back with the use of money instead of true love.Lastly, Fitzgerald uses Juxtaposition to show corruption in the american dream. One piece of juxtaposition Fitzgerald uses is the day of Daisy's wedding. Right before the wedding started Daisy was found “lying on her bed as lovely as the June night in her flowered dress- and as drunk as a monkey”. This juxtaposition just shows how much Daisy did not want to marry Tom. Who would be drunk before their wedding even started?Scott Fitzgerald published The Great Gatsby, a novel that would later become one of the best known pieces of classic literature in history. However, at the time of its publication, Gatsby was fairly unpopular ad the reviews were never consistent. You can test out of the first two years of college and save thousands off your degree.Anyone can earn credit-by-exam regardless of age or education level.A common misconception of the American Dream is that anyone has the potential acquire a fortune and reverse the past....
