Grading rubrics can be of great benefit to both you and your students.

The four-point rubric uses four potential points the student can earn for each area, such as 1) strong, 2) developing, 3) emerging, and 4) beginning.

To turn your rubric score into a letter grade, divide the points earned by the points possible.

There is a clear distinction between general observations and specifics. The reader feels a strong sense of interaction with the writer and senses the person behind the words. Sentences are strong and expressive with varied structure Writer's voice may emerge strongly on occasion, then retreat behind general, vague, tentative, or abstract language. The reader is informed, but must work at remaining engaged.

Supporting details are relevant and explain the main idea. The writer shares some information, facts and experiences, but may show problems going from general observations to specifics. You can create customized rubrics for primary, elementary, middle, and high school. When you make a rubric, you can use default text for a variety of existing performances, or create your content from scratch.Well-developed introduction engages the reader and creates interest. Thesis clearly states a significant and compelling position or belief. Conclusion effectively wraps up and goes beyond restating the thesis.Rubrics are not simply a checklist for grading student writing. Many teachers use them as both a grading tool and a teaching tool.It is helpful to show them examples of written pieces that meet and do not meet the expectations. As an added benefit, because the criteria are explicitly stated, the use of the rubric decreases the likelihood that students will argue about the grade they receive.Critics complain that rubrics are rigid, unworkable and do a disservice to student writing. It seems that, as a tool for teaching and grading, rubrics are a controversial means of assessing student work.
